Back to School Tips - Day 2 - Back to School Safety Tips
#1. Playground Safety. More than 200,000 kids in the U.S. are treated in the emergency room for playground related injuries. Make sure your child is dressed in playground appropriate attire, and check for the general safety of the playground. Check out this article here: http://goo.gl/yDV5OQ
#2. Heavy Backpacks. Carrying too much weight in a backpack can stretch and strain a child's muscles causing injury to the neck and spine. Kids shouldn't carry more than 10-15% of their body weight over their shoulders. Prevent injury by sorting though the backpack to see what can be left at home. Place heavier items in first and distribute the weight into outer pockets.
#3. Bike Helmets. More and more children are starting to ride their bikes to school. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of injury by up to 85%. The only exception: please remove the helmet before playing on playground equipment.. read the article above to find out why.
#4. Stranger Danger. Every child should learn about this from their parents at a young age. Whether at school or on their way to and from, all children should be aware of their surroundings. Remind your child to tell a playground attendant or teacher if they notice anyone suspicious or if someone outside of the school tries to make contact with them.
